The UK Parliamentary Chess Club was set up by staffers following the Lords vs Commons match which took place in the Speaker’s House in the spring of 2023.
Since then, the club has grown considerably with the involvement of several MPs and Peers, playing matches against schools, universities, clubs and perhaps most notably the UK Armed Forces Chess Association.
Over the summer, the Speaker of the House of Commons Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP very kindly agreed to become the Club Patron, granting them the ability to meet and play in Portcullis House on every Monday evening 6-7.30pm when Parliament is not in recess.
The club is open to all who work or used to work on the Parliamentary Estate as well as for former and present Members of the House of Commons and the Lords; if you are eligible and are interested in joining please contact the club captain Peter Hornsby at [email protected] or on 07528665226.
All ages and abilities are welcome, we have a huge range of players so you certainly don’t need to be a Magnus Carlsen or Judith Polgar!
The Women’s Parliamentary Football Team trains on Wednesday mornings from 0800 to 0900 and they have 5-a-side matches on Mondays for 30 mins in a league.
The football team is a great group to have fun, make friends and get some exercise before / after work! We’ve had amazing events too, such as hosting the Women’s Afghan Refugee Football Team, training at Tottenham Hotspurs stadium and a match against Camden FC.
If you’re interested in joining, please email [email protected] with your phone number & the name of who you work for.
Two years ago today, Meg Williams organised the successful inaugural event which took place at Lord’s Cricket Ground, and later that summer a small team took part in their first soft ball cricket tournament. Needless to say, the last two years have been particularly busy, but with the light at the end of the tunnel in sight, this month will see the re-launch of the team.
With this in mind, the WPCT would be delighted if you are able to attend the first event on Monday 12 April, at 15h00 with Clare Connor, incoming President of the MCC, Managing Director Women’s Cricket, ECB and Former England captain for our virtual Cricket and Coffee event.
The team is for all abilities, whether you are new to the game, a professional or just have a passion for the sport and would like to get involved and learn more – open to MPs, Peers and staff of both.
The aim of this event is recruit members of the Women’s Parliamentary Cricket Team, with the aim of setting up a regular training schedule, ready for some fixtures, as well as social events throughout the year.
To RSVP to the event, or if you would like to get involved with the team please email [email protected].
Welcome to Lords, MPs and Staff of both Houses – we are looking for new recruits of all abilities. The team is looking to hold semi regular training sessions, and some summer fixtures, as well as social events.
Our first event is a Virtual Cricket and Coffee, with Clare Connor – incoming President of the MCC, Managing Director Women’s Cricket, ECB and Former England captain.
If you’ve got an interest for cricket, and would like to have a try but haven’t before had the chance, please email [email protected].
