The Hansard Society,  an independent, non-partisan political research and education organisation, has published its Audit of Political Engagement, the only annual health check on our democratic system.

Now in its 13th year, each Audit measures the ‘political pulse’ of the nation, providing a unique benchmark to gauge public opinion across Great Britain with regard to the political system. The latest Audit of Political Engagement finds that the public claim to be more interested in and knowledgeable about politics than they were in the last Audit survey, and this year’s report finds some of the highest levels of engagement recorded in the 13-year time series.

Levels of claimed interest in (57%) and knowledge of (55%) politics have both risen eight points in the last year, more people say they are ‘certain’ to vote in the event of a general election (59%) than previously, and more people claim to be a strong supporter of a political party (41%) than at any time in the Audit series. And for the first time in the study, a majority – 52% – of the public claim to be knowledgeable about the UK Parliament.
